Summer plans!

Are You Ready for Summer Break? I know I am! It’s crazy to think that next week will be the last time I’m on campus as a freshman in college. I can’t believe my first year is already over! While it has been a roller coaster of emotions, I’ve learned a lot and made many great friends. Don’t get me wrong—I’ve loved meeting so many amazing people—but I’m ready to go home and spend time with my family and friends I haven’t seen in a few months. I’m heading home next week. However, I won’t be staying long, because I’ll be performing in a professional theater over the summer!

For most of the summer, I’ll be working and performing in the Wild West Spectacular show in Cody, Wyoming. I’m beyond excited to be part of this show—not only for the incredible experience, but also because it will be the first time I’m paid to perform. I was cast as a female ensemble member, which means most of my role will involve dancing. I’m happy about that since dancing is my strength. I grew up dancing for hours every day, so I’m used to pushing myself physically. Honestly, I’m excited to keep doing that with this show. As a musical theater major, I usually only dance for about an hour each day, so being in a production that requires long rehearsals and frequent performances will challenge me both physically and mentally. It’s a great way to increase my stamina, build endurance, and grow stronger overall. My sister did this summer job a few years ago and had an amazing experience. That’s why I know I’ll love performing with this company, even if they’ve made changes to the program. She also met Katja Roberts—a senior musical theater major here at Ohio Northern University—during the job, and they’ve been close friends ever since. Knowing that friendships like that were formed in this company makes me feel more confident that I’ll find long-lasting connections this summer, too.

While I’m thrilled to perform at a professional theater, I am a little concerned about the distance. Being from North Carolina, Wyoming is far from my family. I’m not trying to complain—this is an incredible opportunity—but not seeing them for the entire summer will be tough. Still, I know being away will help me continue building my independence. That’s something I’m working on, especially when it comes to being content with my decisions. Another great part is that one of my friends from my major is also performing in the show. I’m grateful we get to go through this experience together.

Overall, I can’t wait for classes to end and for summer to begin! As much fun as this year has been, I’m ready to perform and make lifelong friends. I wish you the best on all your finals and hope you have a fantastic summer break! If you’re a senior, I can’t wait to see all the great things you’ll do in the professional world. If you’re coming back next year, I hope summer gives you a nice rest before the chaos of a new semester begins!

  1. This sounds like such an exciting summer! Performing in a professional show is such a huge step, and it’s great that you’re getting to do what you love. It’s totally normal to feel a bit nervous about the distance, but it sounds like an unforgettable experience. Wishing you all the best as you take on this new adventure!
