Social Media Workshop
Last Friday, April 4th, I attended the Social Media Workshop held by the Public Relations Student Society of America department here at ONU. For those who don’t know, this annual event is held on campus. The school invites speakers from multiple companies to speak about their social media experience and the best ways to maximize your usage for personal and professional growth. Some of the keynote speakers had a similar understanding of how social media is essential, but it was interesting to see how they tied everything back to their companies. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this workshop because I wasn’t sure if the sessions would be beneficial to me. With musical theatre and entertainment, it is crucial to learn how to market yourself, but you also need to understand what media creates the best outreach and what types of media to put out to gain the most outreach. Since this workshop was created by the public relations team at the school, I figured the information would be tailored more towards PR, but I actually was able to find things from each session that were important and helpful for me to know for my major. I sincerely enjoyed attending each class throughout the day because we got to choose which sessions we wanted to participate in and ensure they could best pertain to my personal journey with Social Media. For example, a few sessions talked primarily about LinkedIn and specific ways to optimize your information through the platform. I don’t use LinkedIn, so I wanted to make sure I went to the other options during those times to ensure I was using the time wisely.
I honestly don’t think I had a favorite session, I genuinely liked all of them equally. I did have to miss half of one of the sessions because I had a test (evaluation) for one of the other classes that I needed to do for another class, but I could still get some good information during the second class time. I’m not sure if I was more awake after lunch or just enjoyed the last 2 sessions better, but I felt like I had a better time during those classes.
I had a great time during the workshop. I think all of the speakers were very knowledgeable, and I could find something related to me and my major in each of their classes. Even though I could find something in each of the sessions, I’m not sure I would go again because the classes are better for those in marketing specifically. It will honestly just depend on the speakers, classes, time, and the day the workshop takes place.
