Podcast Blog
I officially made my first ever podcast and I am so happy with how it turned out. Initially when I was given this assignment I kind of freaked out a little. As someone who doesn’t listen to a lot of podcasts, I don’t fully understand the best layout so the thought of having to create my own podcast scared me a little. I understand that podcasts are important because they allow us to connect with an audience on a certain topic by sharing our voice, knowledge, and personality in a more conversational and informal way. However, I had never made a podcast, let alone interviewed someone on a topic I didn’t fully understand so I wanted to make sure I asked questions that would prompt good answers. Even though I wasn’t sure of the questions to ask and what to say in my podcast, I knew hands down the person I wanted to interview.
Katja Roberts is a senior here at ONU and she is getting her bachelors in musical theatre with a minor in social media. Even though I know Kat on a more personal level, that isn’t the only reason I decided to interview her. She currently runs all the social media pages for ONU theatre arts and has for a few years. Her job consists of making reels and videos showcasing the students during rehearsals, showing behind the scenes of our productions, making announcements about auditions, and even making posts about alumni and their success out of school. We talked about the journey Kat has had with social media and how she is planning on using it outside of school since she is graduating this upcoming May.
During the interview, Kat said something that I loved. She reiterated the fact that social media can help you build your personal brand. Especially for those in entertainment, it is super important to utilize social media to put yourself out there and showcase your skills. In the workforce, I believe this applies to any job but especially for the arts, casting directors and talent agencies look at your instagram and other platforms so they can get a sense of who you are when you aren't having to perform for them in the room. This makes it even more important to make sure what you are posting is something you wouldn’t mind anyone seeing at any time.
Overall, we had a great discussion about how social media is important, the journey it can take you on and the opportunities it can give you. Honestly there isn’t a whole lot more to say, the interview speaks for itself. Personally I am excited to start taking my social media to a new level to help create a better, more interesting brand for myself. I want to start posting videos about my dance and singing because I have always been too scared too in the past and it's important to put yourself out there even though it can feel scary. The next step towards becoming better at my craft is to push my creativity and stop being scared of what everyone thinks of me and my ability.
I don’t want to say too much more about the interview because I think Kat has a lot of interesting points to say. If you want to get a better understanding of how social media can help you or impact your life go and check out our episode of Kelsey’s Comments with the link below!
